What Is The Qur'an?

WHAT IS THE QUR’AN?

From the History of Arab people before the advent of Islam in the 7th Century AD we can see that they had little to be proud about, except for their poetry. Indeed there were many poetry competitions among the Arabs before the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the Messenger Muhammad (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). However when the Qur’an was revealed via the angel Gabriel (Jibraeel in Arabic) to the Prophet, Allah challenged the people in his own time to produce the like of it, matching its style, grammar, meaning and impact. The Arabs are obviously the most able to meet the challenge and yet they have failed to do so, even to this day. The non-Arabs are less able to meet the challenge (for greater reason) and the Messenger Muhammad never claimed to have written the Qur’an himself, there are in fact over 100,000 authenticated sayings of the Messenger Muhammad, none of which match the style and grammar of the Qur’an. From these facts alone the Qur’an must have come from a source beyond our own reality. Indeed it testifies itself that it is in fact the word of Allah/God. It is intended in this leaflet to elaborate on this.

The Miraculous nature of the Qur’an proves beyond any doubt that it can only be from our creator and commander Allah and hence proves the authenticity of the Messenger-ship of Muhammad. Some of the miracles of the Qur’an include its incredible recitation, its universality, its dealing with the unseen, its legislative nature, the recently discovered scientific facts it tells us about, its numeric miracle, the vast subject matters dealt with inside it, how it has been presented, the impact it has on human beings, how one feels attached to it, its ruling on actions and spiritual matters and so on. Some of the incredible scientific miracles are highlighted below:

Allah says in the Qur’an that He makes you in the wombs of your mothers in stages one after another in three veils of darkness. [Az-Zumar 39:6] and ...We made the drop into an ALAQAH (leech-like structure), and then We changed the ALAQAH into a MUDGHAH (chewed-like substance), then We changed the MUDGHAH into IDHAAM (bones, skeleton), then We clothed the IDHAAM with LAHM (flesh, muscles), then We caused him to grow and come into being as another creation. [Al-Mu’minun 23:14] This accurate staging of human embryos was described late into the 20th century. The interpretation of the verses in the Qur'an referring to human development would not have been possible in the 7th century A.D., or even a hundred years ago proving its miraculous nature.

Moreover Allah says in the Qur’an Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of Creation) before We clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing.  [Al-Anbiyyah 21:30] Modern scientific theory tells us that the universe was indeed once together and was clove asunder (the big bang theory) and that all life originated from water, these facts would have been impossible for someone to know over 1400 years ago!

In addition Allah says in the Qur’an We built the heaven with might, and we expand it wide [Az-Zariyat 51:47] Scientists have only very recently discovered that the universe is expanding

Another miracle of the Qur’an is numeric in that certain words and their opposites have been mentioned exactly the same number of times, for example
Life & Death have been mentioned 145 times each
Good & Bad have been mentioned 167 times each
Hardship & Patience have been mentioned 114 times each etc… etc…
Singular Numerical miracles include the fact that the word Prayer has been mentioned 5 times, the word Month 12 times, the word day 30 times and the word Days 365 times etc…

The legislative miracle of the Qur’an is the fact that this one book contains guidance used for legislation for an Islamic State, which lasted for over 1300 years without any need for abrogation or amendment. When compared to other systems and laws e.g. Britain’s Hailsbury’s statutes, which occupy whole libraries and which are constantly being amended, one can appreciate this miracle of the Qur’an. The Qur’an not only legislates law and order but in fact much of the law is in more depth, more comprehensive and more explicit than laws made by man even in this new millennium about contracts, about rights, about treaties, about Inheritance etc…Indeed the Qur’an still proves itself as the perfect solution to the problems which beset mankind today as it did in the 7th Century AD! Problems for which man has failed miserably to find a solution from his weak, limited mind such as for racism, immigration, poverty, inflation, exploitation etc…

From the above examples we can clearly see that the challenge of the Qur’an stands defiant of man’s intellectual ability and commands the quality of a miracle unparalleled even to this day. There is no way for a human being to have authored the Qur’an which leaves us to refer to the Qur’an itself to tell us about the author. The Qur’an states that it has been revealed by the same God who sent all the Messengers and Prophets to mankind from Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus to the final Messenger Muhammad (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon them all) which we must therefore accept rationally and logically, as there remains no other explanation. This therefore proves the Messenger-ship of Muhammad, the finality of God’s message in the form of Islam and invites mankind to embrace Islam in order to save himself from hellfire and enter into Allah’s paradise.
